Mike Ness: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right

Since Social Distortion is so clearly Mike Ness' souped-up vehicle, what's the difference between his solo career and the band's? Here, with these two take on the Bob Dylan (likely via Johnny Cash) song, "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" the distinction is laid out pretty clearly.

"It used to go like that..."

"...But now it goes like this..."

Ness does usually tour with a band, albeit a more country-rockabilly-folk one, as this 1999 FM broadcast from Boston demonstrates well.

  3. I have been reconsidering my disinterest in Social Distortion since you started posting about them. I mostly remember them from hearing "I Was Wrong" on the radio a lot in the mid-90s, and from repeatedly watching "Another State of Mind" for the Youth Brigade and Minor Threat footage.

One day you should do a post about the Strung Gurus. I remember Mike Knott talking about attending Dennis from Social D's funeral. Had that band got off the ground, it probably would have been Mike Knott's single greatest musical project.

Yup I like the full-force rock n' roll one most but I like the other one too.

I think I watched AS of M with you, that footage of Ness knocked me out.
The best starting points are likely Mommy's Little Monster' and their self-titled.
As For Knott he and his fellow Orange County-ian Ness have a lot in common, though Ness' artistic vision a billion times more cohesive. I would do a post on the Strung Guru's in a second if only Knott released more than two f-in songs!!

I prefer DS to MN also but with that voice the two can be hard to separate.

  6. I love both Social Distortion & the Mike Ness solo material. When I first heard Social Distortion years ago, I could pick up very faint root rock influences. They were so subtle that you would had to have an instinct to detect them. That instinct was confirmed when future recordings put the root rock influence forefront. Thanks for this labor of love. It's appreciated.

  7. The band version sounds closer to the take on the CHEATING AT SOLITAIRE album than the solo acoustic version from MTV 120 MINUTES. To me there is little distinction between his solo/group activity

Yeah it's like Ness had very gradually grown up without losing what we loved about him ion the first place - glad you enjoyed the labour!

Juxtaposing those two videos does make the contrast appear stronger but the SD albums of recent years have downplayed the country while the solo albums turned it up.

  11. I don't suppose you'd repost this? I'm a big Social D/Mike Ness fan, stemming from seeing them somewhere in the Valley in '81, after they appeared on a Rodney on the Roq comp, and I'd love to hear this.
