The Subhumans: Pissed Off...With Good Reason (1978-1995)
Okay there were six ways that you could wreck an early-eighties hardcore re-issue during the CD boom of the nineties:
1) Non-chronological sequencing of material
2) Over-long running time
3) Inclusion of dodgy live and/or demo material
4) Unexplained omitting of well-known tracks
5) Inappropriate and/or ill-fitting cover art
6) Adding newly-record material
The Subhumans CD, Pissed Off … With Good Reason! (Essential Noise / Virgin Music Canada, V2 41724, 1996) commits EVERY damn ONE of these errors plus some I haven't even thought of yet. The good news is you can take this out-of-print album here, cherry pick what you need and then go out and BUY the singles comp, Death Was Too Kind (Alternative Tentacles, 2008), even if that release flirts with 5) by screwing with the the band's first 12" cover and fully commits 4) by leaving off "Behind the Smile and "Out of Line" from the Vancouver Independence compilation LP.

Awful cover, but I am still a fan.
ReplyDeleteIs track 7 - Look at the Dawn a little garbled in the original recording, the post, or in my own file?
ReplyDeletegreat stuff here. does anyone have the subhumans limited edition demo cd??? been trying to find thanks for the great stuff
ReplyDeleteI remember buying this when it came out and thought, "what moron thought that cover was a good idea?". My despair with the cover was only outdone by the utterly forgettable live set at the end of the CD. Surely, there was something else they could have used to fill that space. Sadly though, I really do like the remainder of the CD as well as most their other output.
ReplyDeleteAgree completely. Especially with the inclusion of needless live and demo tracks which often led directly to overlong running times. The Negative Approach "Total Recall" CD was another prime example of this. Although that one did keep it chronological and was complete. This album was a bit of a letdown but at the time it was the only way to get these songs. Now, it's a superfluous release thanks to reissues by AT and music blogs.
ReplyDeleteYour list of the six deadly sins reminded me how irritating my SSD "Power" cd was. And, non-hardcore wise, who the fuck put together that idiotic Grapes Of Wrath "Seems Like Fate" disc?
ReplyDeleteanother way to wreck a release: don't ask any of the members of the band. how often has that stupidity happened? thanks for these, jeffen.
ReplyDeletesuperhuman effort!
ReplyDeleteSoc.
ReplyDeleteTrack 7 does sound screwy...
Psycho
I'm lookin for it now...
