Yesterday we talked about the Ramones live albums and posted a raging show from '76 (see HERE). This show, a clear-sounding FM broadcast recorded just a month after the recording of It's Alive, is a scorching set of songs from the first three albums - what many consider the band's peak.

I don't think the first 3 albums were their peak. they were just gettin' warmed up. certainly they were the most minimal but that isn't the be all and end all of all things. you have been kicking out great posts and i sincerely thank you for them. i know it is hard work.
ReplyDeleteI kinda see the first five as the killer period with the next five albums forming strong but inconsistent second act and the last three as a weaker (but till entertaining ) conclusion.

ReplyDeleteYes, The Ramones were at their peak for their first 3 albums mainly because they were perfect (especially Leave Home and Rocket to Russia). They could never surpass that trilogy.
I only saw them once (Brighton Top Rank 1985)and they were excellent. However, I think they became their own tribute band towards the end and "Loco live" is crap by their standards.
It's tragic that they were not more fully appreciated in their lifetimes. If they were alive now they would clean up the festival circuit in Europe.
I've come back to appreciating Loco Live but it's a different animal.

DeleteThe first three remain the most consistent albums as nearly every song on each is great. The later albums has moments of brilliance but never with the same consistency. And yes, more please!

DeleteAs said by convertido - first three were most consistent but peak has got to be It's Alive. Best guitar sound and best live album ever, period, no contest. Saw them in Derby, UK about 1979 (barracudas supporting). Just over 75 mins of non-stop best rnr/punk ever.

DeleteAgree with SteveO above -- It's Alive is pretty much the baseline for any record, live or studio. A lot of the songs actually sound better than they do on the original albums, and it's definitely one of those "desert island" discs for me -- especially the remastered version that came out awhile back.

DeleteThe Old Waldorf must of been amazing? Ever boot from this era that was recorded their is excellent, Television, Elvis Costello, Richard Hell, and a couple others i can't recall right now. Anyone know a the history of the place? Reminds me of the club I worked at in Seattle as a kid, The Showbox it had been around since the 40's changed hands multiple times then in the late 70's a friend of my brothers started doing shows there. Any ways More Ramones is never a problem the more people you turn on to these excellent boots the better, '79-'80 are my personal favorite years as far as live shows go. Cheers All...

Saw The Damned at The Old Waldorf in 1982....great venue..many traveling UK bands would play there before the On Broadway opened about The Mab
