The Week in Video: Joey Ramone, The Dollyrots, Glen Campbell, Jay Smooth and The Green Day Meltdown!
A cleverly-edited posthumous video features New Yorkers (famous and unknown) showing off Joey Ramone's beloved hometown:
Pop-punk-rock 'girl-group', The Dollyrots, have gone from Lookout Record to Joan Jett's Blckout Records to their own, Kickstarter-funded label, and still sound and look great!
As Johnny Cash did nearing the end of his days, country legend Glen Campbell is both surveying his past and creating a final present.
And hip-hop commentator man, Jay Smooth, reminds us why all Mitt Romney's family stories all sound weird.
Finally, the Green Day video of the week is not the rather tepid new track, "Stay the Night" but Bille Joe's meltdown at the iHeart Radio Festival. As a fan, I'm a tiny bit sympathetic but, realistically, I've got to admit that temper-tantrums do not become a man of his age.

Having always considered "green day" a record-company construction put together with the explicit purpose to control a bit of the market they felt they didnt "reach"(corporate for; exploit) I see this "melt down" as a badly rehearsed and frankly quite desperate attempt at creating interest in their latest stagnant offering.
ReplyDeleteYou know youre a corporate-caricature of a "punk-rocker" when every other word is "fuck".
Hey, they've been around since 198fuckin8
DeleteGot to disagree with you here, Håkan.,
DeleteAs one of the mouths who's spread the word of Green Day since...well about 1988, I can tell you that the band spent five-years honing their sound, touring on the indie circuit and releasing albums on Lookout long before such a route inevitably led to a big label deal.
I'm not defending the man's petulant, puerile hissy-fit and maybe he has turned into a caricature but the band have a deep history, which should not be re-written.
New Video, old song, now with cheap essential scenery...
ReplyDeleteWow
DeleteSorry but that is cool. I sometimes write-off the Sex Pistols (and the use of Sid in this video plays into that temptation) but this is a reminded of why I always come back around to accepting their greatness.
Reactions to the meltdown ranged from "punkest thing Green Day ever did" to "least punk thing ever". I liked it, too bad he had to apologize and go to rehab.
ReplyDeleteI hope Billie Joe thinks about the whole situation and how they shouldn't be playing with Kesha and Usher in the first place...
And people should turn off their punk-o-meter, that's just stupid.
Someone pointed out that the rehab thing might be a dodge to avoid the inevitable lawsuit (and radio blacklist), which sounds plausible ('follow the money').
DeleteThe Joey Ramone video was great (the song not so much)...
ReplyDeleteBillie Joe - pathetic. Hadn't the timer been counting down the whole time? The 1988 comment was laughable...
Brian
I like the JR song (but 'like' is the strongest verb I can muster).
DeleteYeah I cringed at the 1988 comment, it sounds so entitled.

ReplyDeleteYoure welcome. :)
Different reality-tunnels are interesting.
Bruno's comment about turning off the "punk-o-meter" is spot on though. What "is" "punk"
If he's really so angry with someone else, why thrash his own guitar in a feeble attempt to impersonate Simonon from the famous album cover to "london calling"?
That'll teach them not to "disrespect" him? lol
Oh, I love civil disagreement (especially about music) - thanks for putting in your own two cents!
DeleteDoes Mitt Romney really turn off his hot water heater every time he leaves the house? That's fucking HILARIOUS.
ReplyDeleteWho'd have thought a man who'd build a car elevator wold be worried about his water bill!
DeleteIn other, more mellower news: Take a listen to this version of a Nils song.
ReplyDeleteListening right now - real pretty.
DeleteI net he only turns it off when they go to live in another one of their houses. I think if she said that, the anecdote would have a different effect.
ReplyDeleteBrian
It seems no amount of curious anecdotes can humanize the Mitt-bot
