The Big Pink: Hit the Ground (2012)
Have I forgiven the eighties?
Well, as a forty-something nostalgist, I obviously listen to a lot music made, if not widely-known, during the 1980's. But if during a discussion about music, we say eighties, we often think of bands like Duran Duran - pouting pretty peacocks armed with synthesizers and styling gel. That sort of thing still galls. So while I'll never completely forgive nor forget the excesses of eighties pop, time has long-since worn my hatred down to a faint grudge.
Young English electro-rock duo The Big Pink clearly have no need to forgive the eighties. A love of left-of-center artists of the decade like New Order, U2 and, in this song's case, Laurie Anderson permeates their work. And it sounds great, who need forgiveness when you've got big, echoing choruses like this:
What about you? Have you forgiven the eighties? What do you think of The Big Pink? Let us know in the COMMENTS section.

the eighties were hüsker dü, r.e.m., the go-betweens, the pogues, the beasts of bourbon, the triffids, crime and the city solution, einstürzende neubauten, nick cave, the fall, just to name a few of them - so no need to moan about this decade ... ;-)))
ReplyDeleteby the way - can you re-up graham parkers "live.alone in america"? would be highly appreciated. thanks a lot.
We're re-developing our 'upping' policy, I'll let you know.
DeleteFor most of the 80's I was listening to either thrash metal or rock from the 60's & 70's. I liked some of the hairsprayed hits of the 80's and, at the time, found most of the much lauded proto-alternative bands kinda lacking (i.e. the only song on R.E.M.'s "Life's Rich Pagent" that really grabbed me on first listen was their cover of 60's garage rock non-hit "Superman"). Needless to say, much has changed since then...and some listening pleasures have stayed strangly the same (the new Corrosion Of Conformity is the best thing they've done since "Technocracy"!)

I remember being shocked to hear "Superman" on the radio in a hair salon back in the day - "Hey this is R.E.M. on the radio!". Obviously that became completely normal later on but in '86 it was jarring.
DeleteHey Jeffen
ReplyDeleteBBC 6 Music played 'Dominos' off their debut album on a regular rotation.I must admit I was pretty heavy into progressive country,Austin bands and Blue Note bebop in the 1980s.
I really like the new album by The Stranglers.

The eighties was a golden era for country-ish stuff from Jason & The Scorchers to Dwight Yoakam.
