don't give up . . . you do such essential work (and I'm not overstating that when i say it). MF was the one that's been working so well . . . what happened? bastards all.
This sucks. Rapidshare seems to be the last bastion for file hosting, which is what I use. Scratching my head to think of another viable option. Any ideas folks?
This is crap. In what possible way could what you do on this blog hurt sales for an artist? What you do here can only INCREASE knowledge of an artist, to the artist's benefit in terms of CD/download sales, touring, and "merch". Of course, as with Parker, often the artist isn't the one who owns the recordings.
Bummer, that's a real blow Jeffen; however, don't let the bastards get you down. Stnd up, dust off and carry on regardless. There's still more music to expose.
I've seen at least one blog using DivShare now. At any rate regardless of what you choose to do I want to thank you for posting so much great OoP stuff and for your focus on Western Canadian punk/alt music. Because of you I have been able to find many classic gems of my youth that I missed dearly once they were gone and I had given up hope of finding them. You and O Canadarm! and Model Citizen have all been great archivists and chroniclers of a great time when "alternative" actually meant something besides a marketing scheme. Thank you.
I haven't been able to upload to my mediafire a/c for a couple of weeks now but if you sign in with Internet Explorer you can at least get to see the files that are there.
that sucks mate.ive had a few files deleted from mediafire recently due to the usual blah blah blah.i also have files on rapidshare that you can access if you follow the link from the post but i cant access the account when i try to log in which is sort of wierd.ill keep using mediafire as long as i can.if you want me to post anything on mediafire while i still can just let me know. cheers jeffen
The current "shut it all down" craze seems like overkill to me. As the London Times (I think) famously asked in the case of Keith Richards' first (I think) drug trial, "Who Breaks a Butterfly Upon the Wheel?"
I completely understand that artists should be paid for their work, and have happily purchased "authorized bootlegs" by Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Wire, Austin Lucas, and various others. As a matter of principle I don't download commercial releases I don't already own, and I don't frequent sites offering commercially available material.
That said, I think many artists are being short-sighted and disastrously slow to adapt to the new reality that their product is going to get out. Sharing electronic files is simply too easy and anonymous to be squelched effectively, and there will always be some people who will go to great lengths to get stuff for free. The only real question, then, is whether individual artists will respond constructively by making material available to their fans(see live recordings by Richard Thompson on BeesWeb and by Graham Parker on both his site on eMusic).
Very sad to read this news, and I'll echo what Davegeek said - You've dusted off a lot of great records from my youth that never should have gotten dusty in the first place.
I know how bad that sucks, I'm still deciding if and how much to repost from The Rare Stuff post-Megaupload takedown.
Selfishly, I hope you can at least re-up Live Alone in America somewhere, as my browser crashed yesterday before I downloaded it and I planned to return to do so today!
Thanks for everything you've been doing here, Jeffen, you know it is widely appreciated far above and beyond the comments you receive, as annoying as their lack can sometimes be.
And you and I both know that beating up on you for copyright violations is unfair; the music we share is unavailable elsewhere, so it's not like you're taking money out of artists' pockets. To the contrary, you always make a point of including commercial links, as I used to as well. Doesn't change the fact we can't access your files, but at least you can content yourself that you're not at fault on moral grounds.
So take your time and see how you're feeling abour re-upping stuff. FileFactory still works fine, RapidShare has certainly improved in terms of how it treats free users. Anyway, thanks again, and whether you do so through this blog or not, ROCK ON.
Jeff, I recently lost all my files to mediafire ,as well. over 2000 files! They said I was infringing on the copyrights of a porn company(?) when most everything on my blog is either oop or so rare no one else has it posted ,or in most cases ,it's music me and/or my friends have made thru the last 30 years ,up until the present. I've started using a new upstart filehoster ,azrowear.net. also ,the most secure is archive.org ,which is like the library of the internet ,nothing will ever be deleted ,and you can post anything!I have got one whole blog back up at mediafire .blogspot.com ,and my main blog at sluggisha.blogspot.com ,is going up slowly newest to oldest ,a great fan of my blog ,who has downloaded everything since day one in 2008 ,was cool enough to store everything on data discs for me ,so I can re-post all my links a whole lot easier. Thanks for James! But this mediafire thing truly sucks ,and we ain't the last. I try to tell everyone i meet to avoid mediafire like the plague ,they will be the next megaupload ,mark my words. No file host will survive this onslaught ,all will perish. We bloggers need to band together ,and make our own filehoster (which i belive is what azrowear.net is!)without any fear or threat of deletion.Fuck mediafire!!Keep on going ,they can't grind us down ,bastards!! I appreciate the work you've done thus far ,and look forward to more from your great blog! Thanks so much ,G O D http://sluggisha.blogspot.com http://mediachrist.blogspot.com
The whole situation stinks of pooh, I guess the bottom line is that music blogs offering links to "free" music are breaking the law, as fucking stupid as that law may be, it is still a law. If I were the owner of a file hosting site, I sure as fuck wouldn't want illegal stuff on my servers either, it's not their fault, they are just covering their asses. Who do you think is going to get raked over the coals first, the uploader or the hosting site? My bet is the one with the most money. What the labels and artists don't realize is this will hurt them in the long run. Where else are we going to be exposed to this music? The radio and mainstream media only care about $$$, and if something isn't going to make them rich they certainly aren't about to play it.
I've really enjoyed this blog and the music I've discovered on it in the year or so I've been visiting. I hope you can carry on your good work elsewhere if not here.
I'll just echo the other thoughts here - you have brought a lot of music to light that I wouldn't have heard otherwise, and I've bought a lot og great music because of the blogs I visit. Just more people shooting themselves in the foot...
I guess you will have to wait for the dust to settle and do a wee bit of pondering.MRML will be missed if you decide to shut 'er down.It has been a good ride.Lots of OOP and vinyl only posts. We all await your decision.
i'll echo the sentiments already posted. i've gotten so much incredible and otherwise unavailable music from you, Jeffen. thank for all that you've done.
i've noticed several blogs that i follow regularly make the move quite suddenly and with little to no fanfare to 4shared.com. i know you need an account to download files, but that's free. i can only assume they try to upsell you to a paid account soon after signing up.
i like to think that the nature to want to share such wonderful music, and write about it and listen to it is not one that can be quashed by a shitty media company yanking your access to the digital files...but i've not had it happen yet, so i don't know. my hope, along with all of your fans, is that you continue in some fashion. if and when you do, PLEASE keep us posted. i'll follow you to any medium on which you feel like broadcasting.
thanks again, and i'm sure if you posted a list of the files you've lost, or want back, we, the collective MRML readers, would be able to back up most or all of them.
Shit news but it's been coming - Mediafire accounts are being locked and deleted left right and centre. 4Shared and Divshare seem OK, but Rapidshare takes around 40 minutes to download an album for free users. I don't believe this sort of thing is going to help the music industry - who's going to buy a load of CDs in a recession without hearing them first? Good luck with what you decide to do.
Sad to read. You gave access to such good music nd what is insane is that a lot of people are probably doing what I do. I like the post, i try and grab the record cause after all we are music lovers and eager to expand our knowledge. Good luck for your next move
most of your postings were unavailable, hardly the material big company copyright holders would care about, methinks mediafire are erring too much on the side of caution without actually knowing what they are locking, or deleting - having worked in music retail for years, i doubt companies would have been too concerned about you - you weren't exactly making er... bon jovi or madonna available. my point is that a lot of rare punk etc ISN'T available commercially, so therefore you WEREN'T breaking any law i know of... mediafire are tarring everyone with the same brush which is ludicrous... i wish they would be a little more conscientious in these issues. is having your own server an option? whatever good luck with everything and once again THANKS :)
I haven't been able to see my files for several weeks now but they can still be downloaded. I could access them using MediaFire Express but not via the browser. I haven't got it installed at the moment due to a reformat.
Terrible news if it means the end Jeff. I tried downloading and installing that mediafire express thingy because I wanted to upload an album to a mate. Pain the in the arse. Ended up deleting the thing in the end. Lets hope another suitable file-hosting site pops along soon.
Thanks everyone for the deluge of feedback. I appreciated both the thankful words and the constructive suggestions. While we're in a bit of a transition period we will continue because of your words.
Just curious: were you given a reason (really none of my business, but, well....). I'm sure they will be after me at some point in time as well, although I am not nearly as established and/or noted as most of the rest of you guys....anyway, I hope you can find a way to continue, and, if you do, keep me informed as to what it is, I intend to "fight the power" for as long as I can, no matter how much work. I wouldn't blame you if you just said "fuck it", not one bit, but I won't. "Fuck mediafire" is more like it, and I personally will continue to fight for the FREE sharing of information until they put me in my fucking grave. Thanks for all you do, Scott M
Shit.

must be disheartening. sorry to hear.
ReplyDeletedon't give up . . . you do such essential work (and I'm not overstating that when i say it). MF was the one that's been working so well . . . what happened? bastards all.
ReplyDeletei've quickly run around to other blogs who use MF and they're all still up. fight on!
ReplyDelete:-(

ReplyDeleteScrew 'em.
I don't know what the solution is.

I have seen other bloggers open up with another email address. Not sure what they meant by that but they are up and running again.
ReplyDeleteBummer, that's a real blow Jeffen; however, don't let the bastards get you down. Stnd up, dust off and carry on regardless. There's still more music to expose.
