Compiler Jeffs98119 (check out his excellent blog HERE) has ended another lay-off to do another volume of Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan. This volume is centered around material from the Dylanfest in New York retailer in 2012. That set list includes some current buzz figures like Regina Spektor, some old vets like Donald Fagan and even punk survivor, Jesse Malin showed up.

As always, what you value and I value here may differ but  hopefully most of us can agree that Richie Havens version of "License to Kill" is powerful as hell.

V.A. Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Volume Thirty

This thirty-THREE (!) volume series features artists covering Bob Dylan songs. All of the tracks are recordings of independent origin (ROIO) and hence officially unreleased.

So as mentioned last time, I came in on Volume 29 but it was Volume 30 that made me decide to get MRML involved with this series. Like Martin from The Simpsons ("Pick me teacher, I'm ever so smart") I wanted to enlighten Jeff when his liner notes said, "I don't know who The Duhks are (or even how their name is pronounced). As he surely knows by NOW, The Duhks (pronounced The Ducks, as a homage to their Disney-proof original name Scruj MacDuhk) are world-folk band led by Leonard Podolok, whose father, Mitch Podolok, founded The Winnipeg Folk Festival. (Yay, for my hometown!) Their fearless re-imagining of "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Dying) is utterly compelling. (Mini-doc on their cover of the song is here.)

Of course we've got a slew of other compelling artists on this volume like sixties bluegrass masters The Dillards, post-modern loser Beck, indie-darlings Antony and the Johnsons, The Gun Club's Jeffrey Lee Pierce, hard-livin', hard-writin' Texas legend Townes Van Zandt, X's John Doe and The White Stripes' Jack White's other other band, The Dead Weather:

V.A. Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Volume Twenty-Nine

Hey check out this cool Cover Me post, where Jeff talks about some of his favourite moments of this series (and I'm even the download link, if that's not too self-referential)
.

This is where I came in. Really. I was deep down into this rabbit hole known as the internet searching for Graham Parker's cover "I Threw It All Away" (for this weighty post) when I found this series. Truthfully, I just did not know what to make of it at first. Twenty-Nine volumes of live Dylan covers! I dunno... But then as it dawned on me, slowly, just how artfully the collections balanced the different strains of Dylan-ism, I grew amazed. Here on this volume you'll find blues, country, power-pop, folk, bluegrass, rock n' roll and a hell of a lot more musical sub-variations then I care to enumerate. Long may you run, Jeff.

V.A. Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Volume Twenty-Seven

This thirty-THREE (!) volume series features artists covering Bob Dylan songs. All of the tracks are recordings of independent origin (ROIO) and hence officially unreleased.

Since I don't have much to say about this volume, I would just like to advocate for Richie Havens as one of the more underrated Dylan interpreters. As my opening offer here's Haven's doing an arguably-superior take on Dylan's Infidels-era track, "License To Kill":

And it's impossible to ignore the joy he evinces on this recent version of the not-so-easy-to-cover "Tombstone Blues":

And lest we forget the cover that IS on this volume, here's RH doing his version of "All Along the Watchtower".

01 All Along the Watchtower - Richie Havens (Mar 13, 2008, Studio 104, Maison de la Radio, Paris)
02 Tangled Up in Blue - Robert Earl Keen (Sep 19, 2003, Zilker Park, Austin, TX)

07 Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar - John Wesley Harding and Steve Wynn (Nov 24, 1990, Club Lingerie, Hollywood, CA)

V.A. Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Volume Twenty-Four

This thirty-THREE (!) volume series features artists covering Bob Dylan songs. All of the tracks are recordings of independent origin (ROIO) and hence officially unreleased.

I'm convinced that this series grows stronger as it goes. It's probably the ever-lessening percentage of blues-jam sorta stuff - see Healey, Jeff (R.I.P.) here - and the even greater abundance of more left-field rock, country and folk material that biases me towards these later volumes. Of course, some might argue this set is dominated by so-called "Dad-Rock" what with it having Neil Young dueling with Bruce Springsteen:

Not to mention the sadly departed Warren Zevon doing an oft-neglected Dylan ballad:

But of course there's also Robyn Hitchcock doing "Lo & Behold" with an interpolation of the Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime", alongside eighties L.A. cow punks, The Textones doing the hard-to-call-it-neglected track, "Clean-Cut Kid":

01 One More Night - Elana James (May 30, 2007, Club Passim, Cambridge, MA)
02 To Be Alone with You - Steve Gibbons Band (SWF3 Festival, November 2, 1981)
03 Is Your Love in Vain - Steve Kilbey (Oct 29, 2006, Phoenix Community Reserve, East Malvern, Melbourne, Aus)
04 Lo and Behold - Robyn Hitchcock and the Nashville Crawdads (Mar 18, 2007, Belcourt Thetre, Nashville, TN)
05 Blind Willie McTell - Steve Wynn and John Wesley Harding (Feb 8 1998, Den Bosch, Netherlands)
06 Clean Cut Kid - The Textones (Nov 20, 1987, Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA)
07 Gates of Eden - Bryan Ferry (Apr 2, 2007, Tempodrom, Berlin, Ger)
08 Blowin' in the Wind - Joe Ely (Dec 31, 1990, Austin Coliseum, Austin, TX)
09 License to Kill - Roseanne Cash Apr 6, 2003, Mountain Stage, Cultural Center Auditorium, Charleston, WV)
10 Slow Train Coming - North Mississippi All Stars (May 11, 2007, WorkPlay Sound Stage, Birmingham, AL)
11 When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky - Jeff Healy Band (Apr 30, 1989, PC 69, Bielefeld, Ger)
12 All Along the Watchtower - Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (Oct 5, 2004, Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN)
13 Masters of War - Ben Harper and Tom Morello (Jun 9, 2007, Harrah's Casino, Council Bluffs, IA)
14 Dark Eyes - Warren Zevon (Mar 4, 2000, Park West, Chicago, IL)
