Kamala and the Karnivores: Girl Band

Kamala and the Karnivores (the Lookout catalog says, "East Bay pop band that featured Ivy, later of Sweet Baby, Kamala, later in Cringer, the Gr'ups, and Naked Aggression, Todd later of Spitboy and Matt from Operation Ivy. Sweet songs about being in love, killing boys, and black thumbs") sounded a little indie-rock in their tempos and melodies but they pulled it off with a punkish swagger.

Kamala, who got name-checked by both Screeching Weasel and Sewer Trout, wrote sharp and thoughtful little tunes, like this anti-anorexia ripper, "Bone Bouquet".

Their sole e.p., 1989's Girl Band, got tacked onto a gargantuan CD of Lookout also-rans, so if you like it - buy it.

Girl Band link is in the comments

Speaking of comments, I've upped this one before with little feedback, this is your chance to add some reaction to the short-lived Kareer of Kamala and The Karnivores!

    1. Kamala didn't write this song, the original second bassist Keri Schwartz did, & they kept it & used it after they "fired" her...& gave her no credit.

    2. So Kamala's not too nice?
Did Ben Weasel lie to me AGAIN?

  2. One of the many bands I saw at Gilman....If it was not for that venue, punk would have been over in the SF Bay Area.....Nice post!

  3. I played this over and over after it had arrived in my mailbox. I'm a sucker for jangly riffs and sweet vocals. Somehow I had forgotten to digitize. Thanks!

  4. I was visiting California from Italy back in 93 (I think...) and met Kamala in Berkeley.
Then I saw her and the Karnivores at Gilman and it was funtastic!!!
I was in touch for a while with Kamala, and she was great.
Too bad I lost her contacts!

  9. Actually, Kamala is very nice, and stole nothing from anybody. Ivy (me) write Bone Bouquet, which is ABOUT the second bass player,Keri, not by her. And I don't remember firing Keri. I think her leaving the band was part of the fallout from the breakup of our semi-relationship. Just settin' the record straight.
