The Undertones: Live in Holland, 1981

My first Undertones (more here) album was actually Cher ' O Bowlies , a mid-eighties collection that really played up the Fergal angle!

Even in those dogmatic days, I still bopped along to the later songs on that comp. However, it's still taken me a long time to warm up to the band's later albums in their entirety. Right now the brighter, prettier Positive Touch has definitely begun sounding sweeter to these bitter ears.

This show from Holland is one of the best Undertones bootlegs I've ever heard. Even though it's moving towards the softer Touch, it still cooks along nicely and the sound, as befits a good FM broadcast, is fantastic. Enjoy Undertones fans!

  2. Thanks for all the Undertones sets. I only got to see them live once opening for The Clash in N.Y.C. @ the Palladium back in the day.We were pissed at all the record company types in the front rows and charged down to the front to pogo. The bouncers forced us back. Feargal then dedicated Jump Boys to us, which set us storming back. A large bouncer started draging me to the exit. Feargal jumped off the stage and pulled me back to safety. The bouncers gave up and we all stayed up front. Great show.

  3. I've always liked 'Positive Touch'. I remember that 'It's going to happen' got played quite a lot on dutch radio. And I seem to remember that 'When Saturday Comes' was a single in the Netherlands. The latest reissues of the album have the album version and the 7" version of Julie Ocean on it - and you really need both.

  4. I like all the Undertones. I appreciate them developing as a band. I too have enjoyed all your Undertones posts. Keep them up! Any solo Fergal out there? He ever do a solo tour?

  5. Being a noob at posting comments, and not finding a "general" comment area, I am leaving it here. I just want to thank you for the tremendously excellent site you have provided. So much music with which I am familiar; so much more unfamiliar. I hope to change these percentages.

Keep up the great blog, my friend.

  6. One of the greatest bands of all time, and certainly a favourite of mine. My first Undertones album was Hypnotised- love at first listen. 30 years later, the sound still gets me. These are my first Undertones boots, so thanks for them. I can smell 'em. Thanks.

  7. Forgot to comment on Positive Touch- as solid a collection o' pop as one could hope to find. Looking at the video link, it is hard to believe how young they all were with three albums under their belts. Imagine hearing such sounds, arrangements from similar aged folks today. Amazing. A great time for music. Loved the horns. Can't wait to listen to this one. Thanks, as always.
