V.A. White Dopes on Punk: 50 Punk & New Wave Rarities [2005]

The world needs a '77-era punk version of Nuggets series, one that focuses on the lesser-knowns of the era rather than the same old names ad nauseum. However, rather then break new (old) ground by doing their own version of Killed By Death, re-issue mavens like Rhino Records make do with re-capitulations of the obvious like No Thanks.





Castle Music's 2005 collection White Dopes on Punk limits the obvious choices (Sham 69, Damned, Adverts, UK Subs, Eater, Slaughter & the Dogs do make it on) but mostly features more obscure bands. To be fair,  it's a bit of a mess. In the 51 [!] tracks herein you get KBD bands like Cyanide, Genocide, Powerpearls bands bands like the Distractions, Tin Openers and The Out, more Messthetics entries like John Cooper Clarke, Gyro not mention a few entries that are more so tangentially related to punk rock (Deaf School, The Fabulous Poodles, Dead Fingers) plus quite a few punxsploitation 'bands' like Jilted John, The Water Pistols and The Punkettes. All in all, it's a pretty glorious mess.

Punk - Past, Present and Future... (1993)

As a quick thanks-you to all my great COMMENTERS, here's a l'il rarity, a compilation put together by Released Emotions, home of The Price (more HERE) in 1993.

As the title implies and label-man Vince spells out in the liner notes shown below, the idea here was to cram 16 years of punk history into 23 songs. It's a revisionist history of course, one that supposes that the English punk sound of '77-'78 never wavered. (How American straight edge satire band Crucial Youth ended up here is anyone's guess!)

 

Anyway it's fun version of history and there's lots of bands who never got what was coming to them here that you can enjoy and hope I'll be able to dig out some of THEIR obscurities some day...









Released Emotions licensed some great '77 vintage stuff here and while they weren't able to get any Clash they did end up with THREE Clash covers, including the Indestructible Beat (featuring Steve Drewett of The Neurotics) take on "Capitol Radio":

Punk Aid: 'Ere's Your Xmas (2003)

This little three song'er will have to kick off my dis-contiguous series of Christmas posts. This wildly-tacky looking 2003 single is a benefit featuring TV Smith (The Adverts), Captain Sensible (The Damned), Charlie Harper (UK Subs) and Martin Newell (the Cleaners from Venus) which slags the pop charts in a pop chart-friendly kinda way. The song bears the Captain's theatrical absurdity ("Say Captain, Say Wot") and is pretty fun, as his re-make of the old Damned obscurity "There Ain't No Sanity Clause".





The big ticket item under this dead tree, however, is TV Smith's "Christmas, Bloody, Christmas" a broadside aimed squarely at the big man in the red suit's symbolic fat ass. While it attacks all that is ridiculous about the season, it's not terribly mean spirited, it just demands more of the season while being a virulent ear-worm (ask my eldest child and his none-too-pleased mother if you don't believe me!)

U.K. Subs: Party in Paris

Many of the powerhouses of British punk in the early eighties were lesser lights of 1977, like Cock Sparrer, Crass, the UK Subs, who just peaked late. There's a story that goes around that Crass wrote "Punk is Dead" (a phrase that will live forever) in 1977 after one of many shows at the with the UK Subs at the White Lion pub in Putney, where, according to Crass members; "The audience consisted mostly of us when the Subs played and the Subs when we played."

While the The UK Subversives, as they began, have long had a unstable rhythm section, singer Charlie Harper, the oldest man in punk, still leads the band to this day and guitarist (and New Red Archives honcho) Nicky Garret, the crucial component of the band's best work, remains a steadfast supporter and occasional member.



The Subs invested most of their big hooks into their singles, hence The Singles 1978-1982 being must-own album. One of their best A-sides is 1980's "Party in Paris" with its hard-rockin' Garrett riff, its subtle keyboards by Captain Sensible, its melancholy lyric by Harper and, best of all, its boat-load of ooh-la-la-lay's.
