Graham Parker & The Rumour BBC Sights & Sounds

Yeah sometimes we can seem like a bit like an adjunct of the Graham Parker Empire here at MRML but we're alright with that, especially when we come across treasures like this. What this is, is a re-broadcast of a crackling performance by Graham Parker & The Rumour on 1977-03-17 done for the BBC Sight & Sounds program. Enjoy!

Billie Joe Armstrong's Deleted "This is 40" Scene
I saw "This is 40" last night becuase I still trust the Apatow brand and for the Graham Parker sub-plot, naturally. Everybody came through, though Apatow's plots are getting thinner even as his ability to work wonders with sprawling cast is rising to Robert Altman-esque levels. Parker was dead hilarious, as anyone who's watched him on stage or recently would guess. One of the MANY strong turns (John Lithgow, Albert Brooks, Charlyne Yi, Melissa McCarthy) was, surprisingly, Bille Joe Armstrong from Green Day who's never struck me as very good cameo material. Billy Joe's taunt of Chris O'Dowd oughta make it into the vernacular but this deleted scene (via diffuser.fm) is a must-see for all rock geeks!

Graham Parker and the Figgs: City Winery, New York (April 20, 2012)
Show was removed due to leeching (2 comments and 139 DOWNLOADS!)
2012 is promising be a great year for Graham Parker (more HERE) but that doesn't mean he's not holdin' back til the onslaught of end-of-the-year projects. GP's still touring with nineties new wavers, The Figgs. As is often the case with this grouping, this live set is heavy on deep album tracks, including only three songs (of nineteen) from Parker's seventies heyday. This is an exemplary audience recording, low on audience noise and heavy on vocals and guitar. ENJOY!

Graham Parker: Live on the Test (1977-1978)
For my list of ten amazing GP videos, please come visit The Big Takeover!
Graham Parker (more HERE) showed Britain's punks you could be angry without being ignorant. However, as the punks got angrier Parker felt the need to match them hate for hate, while continuing to school them on how to focus that anger. Dave Thompson's London's Burning provides the money quote:
"Our attitude to punk was, we were kind of jolted." We were in a field of one, doing things like : "You Can't Hurry Love" really aggrressively, doing reggae with this angry attitude; we had it all together and suddenly we were not the only ballgame. There was this thing called [Punk Rock]....and it was a bit scary for us. So we thought we'd better crank it up another level and came back really nasty."And Parker's records did grow ever-more belligerent throughout the seventies, as you can witness on Parker and The Rumour's Live on the Test. This set is made up of performances done for the BBC TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test between March 17th 1977 and March 20th 1978 . It's further proof of Parker and The Rumour's live fire-power. If, like Parker himself, you believe Mutt Lange's production of his second album, Heat Treatment, is sterile, then you'll find these versions raw and bloody enough to be a bio-hazard.
1 Heat Treatment Parker 4:08
2 Silly Thing Parker 3:09
3 Fool's Gold Parker 4:26
4 Pourin' It All Out Parker 3:40
5 Gypsy Blood Parker 5:32
6 Don't Ask Me Questions Parker 5:22
7 Hold Back the Night Parker 3:16
8 Not If It Pleases Me Parker 3:01
9 Soul Shoes Parker 3:23
10 Kansas City Parker 3:13
11 Stick to Me Parker 3:32
12 Problem Child Parker 3:42
13 Back Door Love Parker 3:09
14 Thunder and Rain Parker 3:19
15 Turned up Too Late Parker 3:34
16 Saturday Nite Is Dead Parker 3:23
17 Tear Your Playhouse Down Parker 3:58

Graham Parker: Live! Alone in America (1989)
We've tried three new hosts (Crocko, Rapidshare and Nekups) based on your comments (see HERE) please give us your review of the one(s) you try. Your feedback is highly appreciated!
To help pass the time till the start of Graham Parker's Big Year (more details HERE) MRML is going to dig into the bulging 'GP stuff' folder, to bring you a wide-ranging selection of Recordings of Independent Origin and Out-Of-Print wonders.
Upon my first exposure to the solo Parker of Live! Alone in America I was underwhelmed. Perhaps because GP had been such an impressive band leader, I wasn't ready for this ultra-stripped down set. Now, of course, I can hear how the raw passion still burns through on both familiar tracks like "Hotel Chambermaid and the otherwise-unavailable ones, "Soul Corruption", "Three Martini Lunch" and "Durban Poison". I've been listening to this album non-strop this week and have really come to hear how by cutting the arrangements to the bone proves just how tightly written these songs really are.

What's Graham Parker's weakest album?
Is there a Down in the Grove, a Goodby Cruel World or a Lucky Town in the man's discography?
If there is such a glitch in the works, I'd argue that it's The Real Macaw a half-hearted attempt to make peace with eighties soullessness that plays to none of GP's strengths.
The fault lies not with the songs but with David Kershenbaum's lifeless production. To hear how the songs should have sounded, check out this '83 FM broadcast, which gives the Macaw material some extraordinary passion.
