V.A. Last Call: Vancouver Independant Music 1977-1988

While Last Call suffers a bit from vaulting ambition - forty-eight songs is a tall order -  this 1991 musical history of Vancouver music, punk and beyond, from Zulu Records (ZULU 5-2) is stellar document of a place and time. As a historical document, however, it is stunning. Note how the compilers cover so many of the different facets of the Vancouver Underground (punk, art-noise, garage-rock, alternative, power-pop, cow-punk and even CanCon radio stars 54-40! So while it's not the sort of collection most people will listen to straight through, the pickings here are rich and you will be rewarded with something new and shining each time you comb through it.

Jimmy Cliff Does Rancid, The Clash and Bob Dylan

Jimmy Cliff is one of the greatest artists ever to come from Jamaica (where the competition for that honour is murderous) and hearing him cover Rancid's"Ruby Soho, The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" as well as Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall" on the Tim Armstrong-produced EP Sacred Fire (Collective Sounds, 2011) is a sweet, sweet sensation.

Active Dog: Rat Race (1979)

Early Vancouver punk bands, Active Dog had quite the pedigree, Bill Shirt (later of Los Popularos), Buck Cherry (later of The Modernettes and Lost Durangos - see HERE) as well as Gord Nicholls and Robert Bruce (later of the Pointed Sticks) and Ross Carpenter (later of...well, see here).

Both sides of the single are pretty rockin', with "Rat Race" being a little closer to lo-budget New Wave and "Good, Filthy Fun" being the more straight-up guitar-punk tune.

V.A. Back to Front (1977-1983) Volume One RE-UP

I originally pulled this post when it received two comments for 43 downloads. I can't apologize, since it's an almost  reasonable response to a totally unreasonable situation. After all, a good post is worth a good word in return, here or anywhere else. I certainly appreciate when people just stop long enough to say a quick 'thanks (or 'danka' or 'gracias') but it's those moments when people actually communicate their own ideas about the music that's been posted, those moments bring a huge fuckin' grin to my face.

So, regular commenters - Nazz, Big Scott, Brushback, ViaCom..., Doug, Revolutionary Bum, Nick, Longy, Snatzo, CallPastorJerkface, LemonFlag, Woodworker, Sock Monkey, Barrie B, Biopunk, Johnny Hank, Rinjo Njori!, JBull49, Roy Pearl, Justin Crash, Chris Y., DaveGeek, Sociologian, Dave Sez, Roberto, KennyHell77* (and that's just a review of the last week or so - there's MANY more regulars who rock!) and anyone else who actually give a shit about human communication - this one's for you!

*P.S. Looking at that lengthy, and admittedly incomplete, list of regulars make me realize that this blog has it pretty good. That doesn't mean I won't say something if the comments grow really sparse but maybe I'll try to say it just a little better next time!

When  Incongito Records began this limited-edition series back in 1993, they made an honest attempt to contact as many of these late seventies/early eighties bands as they could to secure rights. That attention to detail  gave this series a reputation as one of the best in the torrent of punk retrospectives that the nineties unleashed.  Compiler Peter Parzinger tilted this series towards wilder, cruder punk rock from all over the Western world with bands like K9's, The Chosen Few and Mittageisen. Thankfully, he also lets the series ratchet down the aggro for the fun "Eddie's New Shoes" by Blitz Boys, The Letters light but catchy-as-hell, "Don't Want You Back" as well as the Nasty Facts' power-pop number, "Drive My Car".
