While Last Call suffers a bit from vaulting ambition - forty-eight songs is a tall order - this 1991 musical history of Vancouver music, punk and beyond, from Zulu Records (ZULU 5-2) is stellar document of a place and time. As a historical document, however, it is stunning. Note how the compilers cover so many of the different facets of the Vancouver Underground (punk, art-noise, garage-rock, alternative, power-pop, cow-punk and even CanCon radio stars 54-40! So while it's not the sort of collection most people will listen to straight through, the pickings here are rich and you will be rewarded with something new and shining each time you comb through it.Hey! Please come check out the ten great videos of the early Vancouver scene over at The Big Takeover!
I've noted where further music is available elsewhere (including other blogs). Slow, possibly my favorite Canadian band ever...
ReplyDeleteCan someone bug Sudden Death into re-issuing the Dishrags "Love/Hate" disc? Please?
ReplyDeletelove this comp. definitely, as you said, a mixed bag.... but still the bag is full of goodies.
ReplyDeletethis holds my fave 54*40 song, actually, and i am not ashamed to admit that i really like 54*40.

SOMEONE HAS TO HAVE CANNON HEATH DOWN'S 'HEART-THROB COMPANION' LP !!!???!!!
ReplyDelete*cough*
I've got the Young Canadians and Modernettes Zulu CDs, if they are different than the Sudden Death ones, I'll send you them.
I've got this on CD as well, but haven't scanned the liners. That's a bit of a daunting task given the number of pages.
ReplyDeleteAnd, man, every time I hear that Scramblers track it just makes me hate Bruce Allen a little more for screwing the band so completely. They coulda woulda shoulda!
@ CallPastorJerkface - I think the Dishrags disc was reissued. There's a link for it at this blog: http://isksp.blogspot.com/2009/10/dishrags-1997-love-hate-cad.html

ReplyDeleteIf I had a scanner I'd send you the 44 booklet that accompanies Last Call.Introductions by Grant McDonagh of Zulu and Tom Harrison of The Province.Bios of the bands and detailed recording notes.Impressive.

I own this compilation, its a great one. Another great one, which is possibly one of the best Canadian Punk compilations is the Vancouver Complication compilation. It compiles bands from the vancouver scene.

Great comp with informative liner notes. A lot of music I don't particularly care for, but I learned a lot from it nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteAwesome disc!Hey do you have the pw for the Go Four 3 link?
ReplyDeleteI have The Scramblers CD. Let me know if you want it.
ReplyDeleteI think it might still be available here:

I love the Shades song on here so much. If no one beats me to it, I can try scanning the liner notes and emailing them to someone for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered if the Shades ever made another song or if it was just the one? Does anyone know?
ReplyDeletelots of good stuff here . . . thanks
