Joe Strummer: Rock Art & Style.

 [Chris Shary]

It's not east memorializing the immediacy of rock n' roll in pen, ink or paint but fortunately artists aren't dissuaded by challenges.

Yesterday, the famous Strummer memorial in NYC was blasted off. I can't deny my first reaction to that image was not a warm one, however, seeing how it moves so many of my fellow Strummer-ites has raised my esteem of the image greatly.

[Bobby Williams]

Interestingly, the day the mural went Straight To Hell (though it is soon to return), punk artist and portraitist Chris Shary (more HERE) decided to do one of his quick Sharpie portraits of Strummer. It's a strong image that goes for immediacy without much worrying too much about the fidly bits

  1. Never liked the Niagara mural either.

Hiding his face behind sunglasses and needing to add a name to it to allow it to be recognized is lame.

However, I am quite envious of Chris's ability to do hair right.

    1. I WANTED to like the Niagara when it was completed but it just looked too much like a typical urban mural. Honestly, since seeing it used so many times in Strummer tributes I have warmed to it...

  2. Shucks yer gonna make me blush. Thanks Jeffen! Honestly the portrait was just kinda coincidentally done of the day the mural got covered. It's a shame when really cool public art gets covered. I still mourn the loss of Laser Kitty in San Francisco. My family and i were just there this weekend, and were talking about how sadly it is missed. I guess when so many people were so moved by Joe it's no wonder how upset people are over the mural being removed. Sorry for the ramble. Thanks for posting,a dans always thanks for turning people on to really great music!!

    1. Well it's a happy (and striking) coincidence - a good news item to follow up a bad news one.
Thanks for all the great art!

  3. I just never thought this picture was very "punk rock"... This "urban" style would have better suited Mick Jones than Joe.

    1. Yeah it does seem like a mural style suited for someone else...

  4. Fan of the NYC mural, and I am happy that Revolt has seen it through several incarnations despite tagging, wear etc. New version by original artist just went up yesterday - it will be good to have it overlooking the park again.
