The Price: The Table of Uncles (1989)

For their third and final release Uxbridge's The Price (more HERE) finally broke the 12'' barrier with their 1989 EP, Table of Uncles. As the self-mocking title indicates, their swan song shows the band maturing without surrendering. While there is a little bit of that 80's coldness in the sound here (see "On the Ice"), it's used to build a bit of space around the songs and not to diffuse them. As rocking originals like "Was it You?" and a purpose-defining cover of "You Say You Don't Love Me" from the Buzzcocks under-rated third album, "A Different Kind of Tension" prove, this is a kicking punk/pop record!

  4. Posted this one many moons ago on my first blog and POP.... discovered the Price with the "Underground Rockers" compilation back in the late 80's and always thought they could/should have been huge. Thanks again to both of you!

    1. Agreed on the lack of attention for The Price and the other bands on UR (like Mega City 4)
      P.S. Damn I miss POP!

  5. Well I must admit that I always thought that this wasn't as good as it might have been but it actually sounds ok here; there's an outtake of 'Jodie' which might have made it stronger (I'd have replaced 'Goodbye' with it and changed the order of the songs, but that's just me) but we didn't get it finished... it would have been great to have done a 'full' album but this is by no means a bad representation of how we sounded at the time. And the title? I was in a pub with Esso from The Lurkers and Steve a.k.a. East our roadie / merchandise man just after I had become an uncle for the first time - at some point in the evening we wondered of the collective noun for a group of uncles was 'a table'. Isn't drinking beer brilliant?!?

Thanks for the explanation of the title - makes perfect sense now!

Still might put up those demos by The Others, just have to find something to use for a cover image.
