I've bought Rancid albums worth repeated spinnings (and seen them play a pulverizing live show) but none of them ever bettered OP IVY's Energy (more OP IVY here). Whatever the myriad strengths of Rancid, the loss Jesse' Micheal's measured singing style and his more literate, less macho lyrical sense still stings. Grease and Garbage is a bootleg collection of Rancid rarities from the early days that hits hard as hell despite any losses, real or perceived.

DON'T FORGET THE COMMENT, PUNK.

yeahhh
DeleteRancid is unquestionably more polished and popular, and their best songs are really really good, but i'd take Op Ivy over them any day.
ReplyDeleteA Downfall collection wouldn't go amiss, but c'mon now... Rancid? Really?
ReplyDeleteRancid has some great stuff, but sometimes Lars gets a little too into the cliched street punk stuff for my liking. I think they hit their peak with "Life Won't Wait". I'd like to see them branch out a little more. BTW, this is a fantastic blog, love it!
ReplyDeleteI know people have their beef with Rancid but...I gotta say, their live show is great. And yeah, I would love to have seen Operation Ivy, but admit it...most people like Rancid and are afraid to say it because they could lose punk credibility. I just don't get why it matters so much.
ReplyDeleteRancid, Operation Ivy, both great bands.

tough call, I'd have to say Rancid more so because Rancid put out more stuff and Life Wont Wait ranks as one of my all time favorite albums. That being said...can't say anything bad about Op Ivy every time I hear an Op Ivy song I smile!
ReplyDeleteRancid.
ReplyDeleteNo contest.
Rancid vs Operation Ivy? It's not a contest. Enjoy both bands for what they are. 'nuff said.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'd take Rancid over Op Ivy. . .but that's largely because I came to the party late and heard Rancid first.
ReplyDeleteRancid is the more developed band.
ReplyDeleteWhether that's a positive thing is up to the listener.
And "Out Came The Wolves" is my third favorite Clash album!

ReplyDeleteRancid are brilliant but there's something irreplaceable about OP IVY.

Downfall might happen but I issue no apologies for going Rancid.

I agree with every word of that, I always though I was along in loving LWW(an album which really made their self-titled follow up seem unbearable.)

It really doesn't matter but the question is fun to ask.

Rancid do have a catalog, which you can't really say for Op IVY
biopunk
On a per song basis the running would be pretty tight

I can do that and discuss each's relative merits.

The order of hearing totally influences the preference.

Yeah Rancid have done a lot, even while sounding consistent.
Rancid's two self titled albums makes them better than op Ivy in my opinion. I'm a fan of Common Rider too but Op Ivy is def better.
