Y'know, to many North Americans Big Country were yet another One Hit Wonder but that's bullshit. True, over here only "Fields of Fire" approached "In A Big Country" chart-wise but back home in the UK the first three albums were huge critically and commercially. On this out-of-print collection of immediate-sounding radio sessions, tracks 1 to 4 were recorded 12/8/82 and tracks 5 to 8 were recorded on 9/3/83. Enjoy!

it's funny to me how some bands can be a virtual flash-in-the-pan over here but huge elsewhere. i know most folks on this side of the pond think Madness had only one song, and that's obviously not the case in england. i wonder if there are bands that the reverse of that is true - huge over here, and only one huge song elsewhere...
ReplyDeleteanyway, thanks for the uploads, they're great.
looking forward to listening to this - do you have the King Biscuit New Year's eve performance by them. I had that disc years ago, but had to sell it. Now, when I want to hear it, I can't find it anywhere!

ReplyDeleteYeah Madness were a phenomenon in England and a OHW here. We lost out big time!

Scroll down to yesterday's post and you should be a happy man
Thank you for these posts, Big country + stuart Adamson mean the world to me, any more stuff demos etc please post cheers
ReplyDeleteFab band, as were The Skids. I think Big Country were better; the ethic was very much the same but the appeal was broader. Adamson was a fantastic writer and guitarist. It's very sad how things ended, I think he would have been a grand old man of rock.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeff,
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for this as it has eluded me thus far. They were a great band still play those first two albums often. Met Stuart twice and he was a real gent and those early gigs were euphoric.
Have a top xmas mate.
Best wishes,
Marky.

ReplyDeleteHopefully we gave you a good dose of BC.

I do think that Adamson's goal was a more populist than Jobson's and hence why you're right that BC had a broader appeal.

Glad you got to meet the man and, as I may have said, finding videos for these posts taught me what an incredibly powerful live band BC really were.
Have a great Xmas!
Loving the Big Country stuff. Got this for Christmas. Check it out.

ReplyDeleteGotta read that book, even if it's gonna make me sad.
Thanks for this! Was lucky to see them on the first 3 album tours. Lost the way after No Place Like Home (as did most fans) but was lucky enough to see them last weekend with Mike Peters (yes, the Alarm's Mike Peters) carrying the burden of filling Stuart's shoes, a great show and reminded me just how much I loved their music!
ReplyDeleteAnd the crowd STILL bounced from start to finish ;o)
Grae
ReplyDeleteThrilled to hear they still bounce!
love it, love you, keep up the great work
