Mia Zapata was a legend long before the unspeakable crime that so cruelly ended her life in 1993. NME once described her band, The Gits, as being like Billy Holiday meets the Sex Pistols" and that does approximate the noisy punk-soul sound they concocted.
This early, Bugs Bunny referencing record came out on Empty Records in 1991 and I've never considered selling my copy.These two tracks, "Twisting, Breathing" and especially "Spear and Magic Helmet" show off the American hardcore roots of the band.

She really was someone special.
I hadn't heard any Gits until recently. I was struck by how much Tilt, one of my favorites, sounded like them. It sounds like Cinder Block was very influenced by Mia, vocal-styling wise.

Absolutely wonderful record. I cannot remember the first time I heard them but it was definitely this single. I was instantly captivated by Mia's voice. Her words and voice seemed so much more sincere and honest than much of the music about at the time. Additionally, she possessed the great, and for punk nearly unique, ability to communicate confidence, strength and vulnerability through her words and voice without losing the visceral qualities inherent to punk/hc. I still remember being greatly saddened by the news of her death when I read it.

I remember, what with all the death that befell Seattle musicians (mostly self-inflicted), how shocking this particular passing was.
Although I was familiar with the tragic history of Mia/The Gits, I hadn't actually heard the music until I watched the film.

That someone so apparently full of life could have it cut short in such a cruel, senseless way... heartbreaking.
