Grant Hart: 2541 E.P. (+ Every Everything Documentary)

On of MRML's most commented-upon series was the one in which I argued that Hüsker Dü singer/drummer Grant Hart's solo career had been unfairly marginalized in contrast with the justly celebrated work of his former partner, singer/guitarist Bob Mould. Now following a well-recieved 2009 comeback album backed by Godspeed You Black Emperor, a new documentary, Every Everything, currently looking for support at Kickstarter, we may be seeing a redress in the balance of praise.

(Watch full-sized version here)

Surprisingly, considering how he'd referred to Mould's late period Hüsker Dü work as "square", Hart's debut was even more more sensitive singer-songwriter fodder than Mould's! "2541" is however, a moving song of loss with a fittingly mournful melody. The fine lyrical details and the the swelling chorus make for the perfect eulogy for the Hüskers. It's blatantly autobiographical but unsentimental and it contains many a stinging line like, "It's probably not be the last time I'll have to be out by the first".

The rest of the EP "Come, Come" and "Let Go" is less-than-spectacular but as this recording of "2541" is very different then the one on Intolerance, it's a crucial release.

So what do you make of Hart's comeback? Of "2541"? Let us know in the COMMENTS section (where you'll find the 2541 EP link).

  2. 2541 is a great song. Robert Forster covered it in fine fashion on 'I Had a New York Girlfriend'. I completely missed the comeback album, thanks for the heads-up - i'll be checking it out.

    1. Marshal Crenshaw did it too, which is also pretty high praise!

  3. somewhere in explanation for this documentary it's said that Grant is one of "the most captivating story tellers you will ever meet". Back in 1990. I had the chance to be included in the radio interview with Grant, along with the chat with fans - it was in Belgrade, then Yugoslavia, after the show with Nova Mob (somewhere I still have the tape from the soundboard of this concert). Being truly and hot fan of Husker than, I tried to absorb every single word of Grant... but as the time kept passing, I forgot most of it ... :( anyway, I admire and love this man and his work a lot.

  4. I love 2541-such a meloncoly, heartbreaking song.

I love Grant Hart's stuff- hell, Don't Wanna Know If You Are Lonelye is THE song that got me into punk rock. That song changed my life (I know it is cliched to say it, but in this case, it is true).

    1. "Don't Wanna Know If You Are Lonely" is THE Husker Du song for m and considering the depth of their catalog that's mighty high praise!

  5. I haven't got round to Hot Wax yet but I'll pick up a copy. I have to say I prefer the Intolerance version of 2541 but its a great song and nice to have this version, thanks.

Hearing Grant always reminds me of a happy period of my extended youth, living in London in the 90's when I saw him solo and with Nova Mob. I always thoroughly enjoyed every show. Oddly, I also associate him with the football world cup - I saw Nova Mob at a club in Glasgow when he came on after everyone watched the Scotland V Brazil game, which was also Scotland's exit. The in the 94 WC I was on a date which took in watching the Germany Bulgaria (IIRC) game at The Garage, then Nova Mob again. At least the game and the gig were great...

    1. Yeah the two versions are quite different but I think of both as essential.

  6. Grant is an amazing songwriter and I like pretty much everything he's done. As does my 14 year old who often sings "2541" for hours. Definitely looking forward to the movie and his new release this year. A double LP, "The Argument" will be based on John Milton's 500 page poem, "Paradise Lost". Really, who but Grant Hart would tackle something like that?
