Roberto's Rarities:
An irregular MRML series powered by the wild generosity of our reader, Roberto. Enjoy and don't forget to leave our benefactor a thank-you comment.
When, in 1978, punkwagon-jumpers The Depressions jumped off after one LP and some kicky if not life-changing singles, like "Messing With your Heart" they scrambled aboard The Next Big Thing, power-pop and re-named themselves The DP's.
While it's The Depressions' album that was re-issued by Captain Oi (now out-of-print), the DP's album, If You Know What I Mean might be the better of the two albums, if just because the band, former members of a Who/Small Faces cover band, seem more comfortable using their power chords for pop rather than punk.
For an informed and witty overview of the The Depressions metamorphosis into the DP's visit the invaluable Worthless Trash.
Let us know you think of The Depressions/The DP's in the COMMENTS section (which is where you'll find the If You Know What I Mean link).

When I saw the name "DP's" I immediately thought of "Double Penetration"- I wonder if they did too.

Thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog.

I've still got that 1st Depressions LP on vinyl somewhere. I always liked that last song on it (Street Attack) for some reason. Cheers for this Roberto and Jeff.

Angel
thanks.
Longy
there's some good songs on that first Depressions LP.
Mon Dieu! Been looking for this for years. As a big fan of the Depressions(yes I like Bandwagon Punk), i was always interested to hear this. As suspected its awful,so I'll probably love it in a week or so, like i did with the Depressions album back in 77.Can't stand power pop as a rule.
ReplyDeleteLet us know what you think of the band-wagon power-pop!
ReplyDeleteThe DP's were a terrific band on the album "If You Know What I Mean." Kind of like a cross between the Ramones and the Cars and every bit as good as either. They have influenced me for life. Any chance for a CD release?
