Seeing these guys for the first time on Tuesday. I am but a young man.
ReplyDeletethanks for this. they remain my favourite band, and though they've never again reached the heights of the andy kerr era (my opinion, i love debating this with fans), their music still defines punk, particularly canadian punk, to me. they're also terrific guys, and treat people right - i've corresponded fitfully with them over the years, mostly before the internet came alive, and always got personal replies and occasionally odd gifts. the last time i asked about old t-shirts or at least the graphics from them since my last couple of shirts from the small parts and you kill me era disintegrated and vanished, and while they couldn't replace them, they were pretty happy to take time for an old fan who stuck with them.
ReplyDeletelike a lot of bands, they excel live. i've seen them all over; where i live now, in toronto, in my old town, hamilton (both as nomeansno and the hanson brothers), in vancouver, of course, and several times on a tour they did of europe in the late 80s when i happened to be there at the same time. one of the more memorable shows was at the opera house in toronto, when ultra bide and alice donut were the opening acts, and all three bands pretty much erased any shit feelings, problems or negative energy in the world, at least for a night.
they're also one of the bands, that when i play their music for the unfamiliar, they recognise that something special is going on, even if they're not punk fans. i don't think you can hear small parts or the day everything became nothing or wrong and not have your brain develop a new, vital lobe, or reawaken a dormant section that you need functioning to stay alive.

I'm very happy that the band carried on post AK, they've recorded some great albums and their live show is still incredible. That said, they've never topped Kerr albums (though Worldhood of the World was so close!).

hey, i'm happy to be able to type up some nonsense in respect for you bringing alot of music to my attention. some of these bands i know well, but it's through the grace of you and other bloggers that i get to discover some brilliant work. taking some time to comment is the least i can do.
