Joey Ramone & Holly Beth Vincent: I Got You Babe (1982)

Joey Ramone (more HERE) loved collaborating with women; from Debbie Harry to Joan Jett to Holly Beth Vincent to Helen Love to Ronnie Spector to the women of the B-52's. This 1982 single finds Joey dueting with Holly Beth Vincent (of Holly and the Italians) on a soaring version of Sonny Bono's "I Got You Babe". The B-side, "One More Dance", is a nice, echo-y rocker from Holly & co.

Debbie Harry & Tiger Bomb (w/ Joey Ramone): Live in NYC, 1987

In honour of his new posthumous album, we've been celebrating the life and legacy of Jeff Hyman (a.k.a. Joey Ramone - more HERE). Yesterday, we mentioned an unheralded duet between Blondie's Deborah Harry and Joey Ramone and today we have a fine-sounding live set that features both of those CBGB's vets. Debbie's part of the set, is pretty aggressive featuring, amongst the Blondie tracks, covers of The Damned's "New Rose" and Suicidal  Tendencies' "Institutionalized" (yeah, you read that right!) Then Debbie brings out Joey for three storming tracks, including two Ramones classic and the then-recent duet between the two, "Go Lil Camaro Go".

While you may not want to continuously re-listen to every one of the 24 tracks, it is amazing how many are pretty damn good like this collaboration with Debbie Harry that showed up as a B-side of one of her less-than-successful solo singles:

Joey Ramone: Ya Know, 2012

Joey Ramone has risen from the dead. Joey's brother Mickey Leigh and his producer Ed Stasium have a gathered a small army of Joey's musical peers to resurrect a series of demos Joey recorded over the last half of his career. The list of contributors is as long as your arm; Joan Jett, Andy Shernoff (and Handsome Dick Manitoba) of the Dictators, Jean Beavoir (and Richie Stotts) of the The Plasmatics, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, Denni Diken of The Smithereens, Steve Van Zandt of Springsteen's E-Street Band, Lenny Kaye of Patti Smith's group and in a touching move, exiled Ramone Richie plays on a good chunk of ...Ya Know. The astonishing thing is how gracefully this Frankenstein monster moves. From the coutry-ish "Waiting for That Railroad" to the power-poppin' of "What Did I Do To Deserve You" to the the glam-rocking-ness of "Rock n' Roll is the Answer" to the rockabilly-tingeed "I Couldn't Sleep" this album is proof positive of the vastness of Joey's talents as song-writer and performer. Sure there's moments where you can hear the stitches threatening to pop (Stasium & co. used only the vocals from the demos and re-recorded everything else) but that doesn't change how much this album sounds..well...ya know...alive!

The Payola$: Live at The Cleveland Agora, 1982 (FM Broadcast)

Back in the pre-MFMF days, Britolboy and I did a great series on the Canadian punk-cum-new wave band, The Payola$ (see HERE). Sadly, those link are gone but here's a new find; a stellar live set from 1982-10-13 recorded for WMMS in Cleveland, OH. The band is into their more new wave, Police-ish phase by 1982 but the songs stayed excellent even while the production wavered. As is so often the case with bands who slicked-up their sound for eighties radio, the live sound is kickier.

While members of the 3 Mustaphas 3 may have been in the Damned, Magazine and the Amazorblades this band's major connection to punk rock is their love of high-speed tempos. 3M3 were kinda like a Balkan version of The Pogues or Gogol Bordello twenty years before the fact.

From the Balkans to Your Heart is an out-of-print German-only LP that compiles all the band's BBC Radio One sessions for John Peel and works as a great introduction to the band.

Chuck Prophet: Live in Norderstedt (2012-04-20)

If you were to invite me to your abode, dear MRML reader, you can probably can ascertain from what you've read in these pages these four years past what would be my first order of business; going through your CD's/Records/Tapes/8-Tracks and your what-have-you's. Now, former Green On Red guitarist and current under-recognized singer-rock-song-writer Chuck Prophet has yet to honour me with an invite to his place of dwelling, yet I have some idle speculations about some of the items I would find, were I allowed to flip through his milk-crates of un-alphebetized, well-worn vinyl L.P':

Garrie and The Roosters: Win Or Lose (1984)

While this series was begun by long-time contributor Roberto, it is fellow blogger, Bristolboy who has generously provided today's rip. May we all be thankful to such giving people.

The Little Roosters (more HERE), who shared three members with Oi! founders, Cock Sparrer and one associate member with synth-poppers, Yaz [!], impressed a lot of people with their glam-rock/pup-rock/rock-rock style, including one Joe Strummer, who produced much of the band's discography and was supposedly paid in new teeth! The band's leader, Garrie Lammin, put out a semi-solo single as Garrie And The Roosters in 1984. On this release the drums are a bit weaker and there's a horn section on the A-side but it's still the same Stones-loving rock n' roll that Lammin has devoted his life to.

The Futureheads: Rant (2012)

Of all those poppy-yet-angular Brit dance-rock bands of the early aughts - y'now Franz Ferdinand, The Killers*, Bloc Party et al  - The Futureheads (see HERE) always seemed like the one most likely to have, well...a future.

 

That said, I sure as hell didn't see this new a cappela album, Rant, coming. If I had, I'd have feared it would sound like a Scottish Manhattan Transfer or the Proclaimers quintuplets! Instead, it's fucking  brilliant! Sure the cheeky set list - The Black Eyed Peas, Richard Thompson, Kelis and Sparks (as well as a batch of traditional tunes and Futureheads classics) - is meant to catch press attention but the boys, whose vocals work has always been stellar, have created something that is much more than a curio. Granted like Chumbawamba and The Housemartins before them this is likely to be an anomaly in their discography but a glorious one.

To promote Rant the band is doing an 'a capella and acoustic tour' (nice video HERE), which seems like the best way to promote this album. If anyone comes into possession of a decent live recording of any show form this tour please contact me!

V.A. The London R & B Sessions (Live at the Hope & Anchor, 1979)

We bandy about the term 'pub-rock' here a surprising amount considered how short-lived its life-span,  how small-scale its success and how ill-defined the term really is. Last time I tried to define the term I said, "Pub rock was an umbrella term for dozens of mid-70s English groups, each playing their own amalgam country-r&b-rockabilly in gritty pubs rather than stadiums" but even that would probably miss out funkier bands like Roogaltor and many more I can't even name. There was also a clear break between the bands who were more interested in playing country-rock and those who really wanted to be the Rolling Stones circa 1965. This 1979 album, The London R & B Sessions (Live at the Hope & Anchor, as even a cursory glance will tell, is firmly in the latter category. It's a retro-rockin' revival and features some fine bands of the era like the Lew Lewis Reformation, Wilko Johnson's Solid Senders, The (Count) Bishops and, fitting our recent theme, The Little Roosters (more HERE).

This single, their third of four, shows the capital-R rock n' roll sound in full-force, with two stomping R&B/Blues-lovin originals sure to appeal to a generation or three of rockers.

Brighton, UK's The Dodgems (more HERE) 2nd Atrix Records single from 1980 is another cool splicing of futurism and retroism. "Lord Lucan Is Missing" features a churchy organ sound, a quick tempo and tremendously hooky use of repetition, while "Got To Give It Up" examines nicotine compulsion in an arty, yet witty and catchy, way.

Brighton, UK's The Dodgems (Charlie Zuber drums, Gary Turner, bass/vocals, Doug Potter, guitar/ vocals, Paul Birchal, keyboards),  who put out two singles on Atrix Records in the late seventies, did this new wave style with a cool mix of futurism and retroism.
