Graham Parker: Live! Alone in America (1989)

We've tried three new hosts (Crocko, Rapidshare and Nekups) based on your comments (see HERE) please give us your review of the one(s) you try. Your feedback is highly appreciated!

To help pass the time till the start of Graham Parker's Big Year (more details HERE) MRML is going to dig into the bulging 'GP stuff' folder, to bring you a wide-ranging selection of Recordings of Independent Origin and Out-Of-Print wonders.

Upon my first exposure to the solo Parker of Live! Alone in America I was underwhelmed. Perhaps because GP had been such an impressive band leader, I wasn't ready for this ultra-stripped down set. Now, of course, I can hear how the raw passion still burns through on both familiar tracks like "Hotel Chambermaid and the otherwise-unavailable ones, "Soul Corruption", "Three Martini Lunch" and "Durban Poison". I've been listening to this album non-strop this week and have really come to hear how by cutting the arrangements to the bone proves just how tightly written these songs really are.

  3. This one has been a favorite of mine since it was first released -- pure, unfiltered GP at full strength -- probably play it more than any other single GP recording I own. Looking forward to more GP (and all the other cool stuff you bring to light!) -- thanks again for a great blog!

  4. Hey Jeffen

    It's only a test:

    Netkups ~150-160 kbps
    Rapidshare ~30 kbps limit
    Crocko ~50-60 kbps

Use what is best for you.It must be a nightmare using Rapidshare for a lossless file!

And of course we all await the new Graham Parker and the Rumour album later this year.

  6. this one has never left my gp heavy-rotation list, especially the ache of 3 martini lunch . . . speaking of rarities, if anyone has the gp tribute from about '98 or so (piss and vinegar, i think was the title), I'm looking for that. also, gp and ian hunter from last week (3/30) at the winery in nyc would be worth more than a passing listen . . . thanks again for hanging in there

  12. I'll admit that this is one of my favorite Graham Parker albums. But, hey, I'm going to be trying the two "bootleg" box sets soon, so I may find those better.

    1. Yeah this needs to be on the bootleg box 3

  13. Yeah the three new tracks here are EXCELLENT.

  14. I always thought it was classy that the first track on this album is the first track on his first album. And Black Honey and Gypsy Blood are as good as any other ballads in recorded history.
