Ya can give Joey 'Shithead' Keithley a beard and a new guitar player but D.O.A. just kept spitting out that ferocious rock-punk that made D.O.A. semi-famous. The band's late 80's period (including 1987's "True North Strong and Free" and 1990's "Murder) should be re-examined by every lover of the old loud n' fast. Enjoy this simple-but-effective footage from a 1988 show!

Shithead is a really cool name by the way.I prefer their early work.
ReplyDeleteUnderstandable but there are great moments all over this catalog.
DeleteI've got some great memories of playing gigs with D.O.A. and getting to know Joey and the various members. Sadly I missed them just last month on their farewell tour, they played a small club in Seattle with The Fastbacks opening! emailed Joey after the last CD came (Best in Years BTW) and then I saw he was selling off all his back stock of D.O.A. stuff, apparently since the winter Olympics in Vancouver BC it's now got the most expensive rents on the west coast and he's moving to Sweden or somewhere where he has relatives. They'll always be a pillar of Punk and no one can take that away from em'. BTW I've got a boot of the above mentioned Seattle show unfortunately it doesn't include the Fastbacks. I'm sure though someone has it. Cheers Jeffen
ReplyDeleteDOA and the Fastbacks - damn do I wish I'd seen that show!
DeleteJoe will indeed always be 'a pillar of Punk' regardless of where his next move takes him!
Rad footage!
ReplyDeleteDOA is probably my favourite band, and they really did some really solid albums after the first two (Talk Minus Action Equals Zero, Murder, 13 Flavours Of Doom) that do get overlooked. I don't think that would be the case if there mid-80s stuff wasn't so jokey or a really blatant attempt to cash in.
The demos to Let's Wreck The Party show that they're good songs, but the cutesy production on it kills 'em. That being said I did ask Joey Shithead to sign my copy of Let's Wreck The Party. In 2012.
GREAT BAND. WAS AT THIS SHOW. THEY TOURED THROUGH SACRAMENTO IN 1986 WITH FASTBACKS I RECALL.
