Of this LONG out-of-print 12", XTC WIki says, "XTC's 5 Senses EP is a Canadian-only EP released on September 18, 1981 on Virgin Records/Polygram Records. It is a collection of five non-album tracks. It also contains the rare (only rare because it was not a big seller) UK single "Wait Till Your Boat Goes Down". Andy Partridge gave the Canadian record company the title for this EP, and was subsequently inspired to write the song "Senses Working Overtime" shortly thereafter." . (For more XTC on MRML go HERE.)

Thanks for saying 'thanks' even though I remain in YOUR debt!!
thanks for all the xtc I appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteXTC!!! The only thing more obscure than "Officer Blue" is my friend Franco Turra's version in Italian, called "Ufficale Blu", which was on the second of my three XTC tribute tapes in the 1990s. Great job on your blog. http://bizarredepiction.wordpress.com/2011/03/05/the-xtc-fans-tributes-skylacking-beasts-ive-seen-and-obscene-collection/
ReplyDeleteAmazing B-Sides? Yes! Amazing blog? Yes! Amazing lack of manners from from most blog readers? Probably. Thanks, Jeff, as always.

Glad you're in XTC.
This is a very interesting EP, jeffen (rhymes with 'Geffen' i'm assuming?!?) thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteThese songs are all new to me ('cept i do remember hearing Wait Till... on another compilation (plodding tune, never liked it).
I must say that this is the first release from XTC i heard (kind of cheating 'cause it's only a five song EP but still...) where Colin Moulding's songs greatly excel those of Andy Partridge's.
I really like Smokeless Zone and Officer Blue (after just hearing them for the first time now!) Smokeless Zone is very experimental with the vocals being somewhat buried in the mix compared to the unusual instrumentation. It almost reminds me of some of Peter Hammill's solo work. (This definitely sounds like the type of song that would benefit from being listened to in a 'smoke-more zone': preferably your favorite "herbal blend" if you catch my meaning!!;)
Officer Blue has now become one of my favorite XTC songs of all time! It sounds like a art-rock *quirky* version of the more straightforward mainstream pop of Love At First Sight. What a catchy off-kilter rhythm! (Interesting muted trumpet[?] break too!) Should have made it onto a 'regular' album (imho).
Andy Partridge's three contributions to this EP are three annoyingly tuneless 'throwaways' in comparison, imo. --dandor
Thanks for getting me back into this stuff and taking to time to do so.

The 80's The Only Ones and XTC Thank you very much for the rarities
ReplyDeleteyou've made an old xtc fan very happy...thanks.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! Thank you!
ReplyDeletedandor
ReplyDeletePartridge could certainly toss off "annoyingly tuneless 'throwaways'" alongside his works of genius. And as for Moulding, well to his eternal credit he wrote 'Making Plans for Nigel'!
favorite XTC post so far! Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteI came across your amazing resource while Robert Quine hunting. I saw him and Lou Reed (I guess Quine was with Lou) back in early 80's in Toronto, and only later realized how utterly devastating Quine was on guitar - your site introduced me to the Lou reed Live at Bottom Line performance tonight and I adore it - thank you for putting out this and other treasures!
ReplyDeleteplease repost all the XTC and Rezillos stuff you got.A cry for (music) help from a greek fan.
