Joan Jett & The Blackhearts: Live 1981!

Of course my first exposure to Joan Jett wasn't The Runaways or even "Bad Reputation", instead it was the song that will be stuck to her name long after her obituary's been penned, "I Love Rock N' Roll". Did we make sneering remarks as teenagers do about how insecure she must be to proclaim her love so loudly? Maybe. Did our bodies start to twitch, instinctively, when then that riff came on the radio? Hell, yeah.

This live boot, which sometimes trades under the title Jett Lagg, comes from a show at the Malibu Club in Long Island on 1981-05-01. It's a believed to be an FM broadcast due to the clear sound and was likely the first Joan Jett bootleg when it showed up in the racks as a double LP back in the early 80's.

  2. Joan's never been a favorite, I lean on Chrissie Hynde when I long for tough girl rock.

But I like the way you highlight an artist and riff of that with bootlegs and rarities. Your recent Go-Gos and X offerings were equally fun.

    Keep on truckin'

  4. This show was broadcast live on WLIR and was actually from a free concert series they ran called "Party In The Park". The concert was at Fireman's Memorial Park in Hempstead, NY. The Malibu was a great club but I don't remember Joan ever playing there.

Regardless of the source, this was a fantastic show!! Thanks for sharing, and more Joan Jett please!!!

  5. I hope my neighbours enjoy this while I'm moving stuff around tomorrow, because it's going to be kinda tough shit if they don't. :-)

    Thanks for a cool share!

  6. My first Joan Jett experience was hearing 'I Love Rock 'N Roll' at lunch hour in school. Then, later that night, recording it via the built-in microphone on my dad's "portable" Sony cassette recorder off the local radio phone-in request show, as I sat, trying not to sing or dance or breathe too loudly, until the end of the song.

    Ahhh, to be eleven again...

  12. Hello,

I know it's been a couple of years, but I couldn't get the link to the music to work. I am a huge Joan Jett fan, although my college professor salary limits what I can get (plus my wife would kill me if I bought everything Joan Jett I wanted). To me she's one of the greatest rock-n-rollers of all time, period (forget female). I loved the Runaways, even after Cherie left (sorry Cherie, I love you too, but Joan's vocals are actually better). Waiting for the Night was a fantastic album.

Anyway, is the bootleg you were talking about the same as the one called "Live on Long Island"? I would love to trade some Joan Jett CD's or DVD's with you in order to add to my collection, if you'd be at all interested. With some trepidation about posting this online, I don't know of any other way to contact you (or anyone else who would be interested)besides e-mail, so mine is jhedger[at]syr[dot]edu. Cheers.
