Nigel and The Crosses (R.E.M., Soft Boys, Squeeze and Bragg

While I'm not YET prepared to go right down the Robyn Hitchcock rabbit hole, his best songs ("I Wanna Destroy You", "Have a Heart Betty, I'm Not Fireproof, "Queen of Eyes", Cynthia Mask" and I know I've hardly scratched the surface thus far) are mercilessly wonderful.

Nigel & The Crosses was the band name for Hitchcock plus various combinations of Peter Buck, Peter Holsapple, Glenn Tilbrook, Mike Mills, Billy Bragg, Andy Metcalf & Morris Windsor. This bootleg from a 1989 show at The Borerline in London features a great set list of both originals and covers in excellent sound quality.

Setlist :

  1. I Wanna Destroy You
  2. She Said She Said
  3. Eight Miles High
  4. Queen Of Eyes
  5. Waterloo Sunset
  6. America
  7. Freeze
  8. The Veins Of The Queen
  9. Birdshead
  10. Rain
  11. Flesh Number One
  12. Bells Of Rhymney
  13. The Rumour
  14. Kingdom Of Love
  15. Listening To The Higsons
  16. Revolution Number One
  17. Sin City
  18. Route 66
  19. You Ain't Going Nowhere
  20. I Saw Her Standing There
  21. Foxy Lady
COMMENTS would be most appreciated (and that's where you'll find the Nigel and the Crosses link)

  2. I was lucky enough to see one of these Hitchcock/Buck surprise shows (minus Bragg and Squeeze) at 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis after a REM arena show. A great night.

  3. I have a Borderline bootleg from around this time that is mostly R.E.M. songs... perhaps a different show? Either way, this is great to have. Thanks.

  4. You are wise not to jump down the Robyn Hitchcock rabbithole without great deliberation, because I fell down it and have never been the same. Thanks for the post, all I had was a flexi-disc of a couple of these guys from B.O.B.

  5. A big thank you for posting this. I am really interested in hearing this performance. I read about them back then, but never heard anything they did under this name.

I have often felt that like many prolific artists Hitchcock is often a terrific writer and performer, but at other moments he sounds like he is a weak copiest of....himself.

  10. heard some of this long ago via an rem aficionado who knew i liked billy bragg, but i'm guessing the version here won't be a third generation cassette dupe so won't sound like they were playing at the bottom of well with a few beehives in between them and the crowd. thanks.

Goodness I love me some Soft Boys! So why haven't I crossed the border to Robyn's Globe Of Frogs? Perhaps we need to take this trip together my friend.

  19. As a big fan of Robyn and REM in the late 80's (saw both of them a year of two before this show) I am SHOCKED, I tell you, that I never heard of this band. Many, many thanks!
