Dr. Feelgood: Live in Berlin, 1980

If you haven't watched Oil City Confidential, director Julian Temple's latest examination of 1970's England, do not delay any further. Temple's brilliant use of British gangster films to sell the story puts Oil City Confidential into the elite company of Rock Docs that transcend the stultifying "they were influential' talking head dynamic.

Of course, Temple also wisely honed in on a band widely regarded, even to their detractors, as a riotous live act. Now, thanks to Bandit999, you can witness some of that live fire from the Feelgoods, albeit sans the attention-grabbing antics of Wilko Johnson.

  1. Feelgood without Wilko is like the Stones without Keith

  2. Ah the mighty Gypie Mayo on guitar - whilst it was great that 'Oil City Confidential' celebrated the influence and excellence of the original band I for one think that more credit should have been given to Wilko's successor, who not only filled two of the biggest shoes in the electric guitar world but also took the band on to greater commercial success by co-writing 'Milk And Alcohol' and many other great songs. The band sound and indeed look fantastic in this footage - why on Earth isn't this available officially?

    1. I know Temple had to focus on the Wilko years because they make the best story but he sure gave short-shrift to the Mayo years despite their artistic and commercial success.

    2. Indeed - when I first saw O.C.C. I remember thinking that Julian Temple probably couldn't believe his luck when he first turned his camera on Wilko... it's been great to see the outpouring of support for him after the announcement of his illness, and his position in the history of rock guitar seems deservedly assured now, but do think that Gypie should also have been featured more in the film. I remember there being a fair bit of scepticism and indeed hostility towards him when he first joined the band, but he won people over by playing brilliantly as this concert footage clearly shows. Great stuff!

  3. The Gypie albums are vastly underrated. I listen to them as much as the classics with Wilko, and they're great !!!
