Steve Eale: Edinburgh, 1987

Favourite Earle album? It's a tough call really but for the moment let's argue that the top three are:

1. Guitar Town - For consistency of song and for that combination of Earle's acoustic guitar and Richard Bennet's twangy electric guitar is just devastating.
2. Copperhead Road - While the title track is the greatest thing he's ever done, I'd argue it's the tiniest bit less even song-wise than GT.
3. I Feel Alright - The real comeback album (Train-a-Comin' was just a warm-up), which expertly puts all of Earle's talents into play.

I admit to fleeting knowledge of the man's later work, so I look forward to hearing your own top three Earle's in the COMMENTS section.

As in tribute to the classic Guitar Town, here, courtesy of ousterhout, is a ringing live show from 1987 where Earle and co. play the entire album

  2. They're all at least interesting because SE never writes a bad song. But the "Twang Trilogy" - Guitar Town, Copperhead Road and Exit 0 - are just classic and I never tire of listening to them. I think that was his most creative period. Can't wait to hear this post, by the way!

    1. I'm tempted to agree but man that nineties stuff is excellent!

  3. Like another renowned singer-songwriter, Elvis Costello, our man Steve is interested in exploring many avenues (including literature; check out his output in the printed word sometime).

With that in mind, I recommend The Mountain, the album he cut with the peerless Del McCoury Band. It's not just good bluegrass, it's great Earle.

  4. I had dismissed his early work as too country rock, but then he hooked my with "The Other Kind"off The Hard Way and that, along with El Corazon and Side tracks, are probably my faves. I've gone back and now appreciate those early albums, but his fun and games with The eye Supersuckers is also fun - Creepy Jackalope Eye indeed.

  6. 1. Train a Comin'- once played the cassette of which for three solid weeks while in the truck.
    2. The Mountain- not perfect but only cause Del doesn't get leads
    3. El Corazon- tomorrow it might be a different post-rehab album or Copperhead Road, but for tonight...

  7. My Steve favourites:

    1. El Corazón: c'mon, "Christmas in Washington" and "Taneytown" are two of my favourite Earle's songs. And the Supersuckers appeared here.

    2. I Feel Allright: the main theme is also other of my favourites. I agree with you, this is the real comeback.

    3. Copperhead Road: "Copperhead Road", "The Devil's Right Hand" and "Johnny Comes Lately", o my god, I love these songs. And The Pogues rules!

    4. The Revolution Starts Now: for a lot of Earle fans this is a minor album. I just loved it. "Rich Man's War" and "The Gringo's Tale" are great songs. And "Condy, Condy" is just hilarious.

    1. Okay, it's official I have to give El Corazón it's first full, proper listen (especially if there's more stuff with the Supersuckers on there!)

  8. Depends on my mood... but Train a Comin, El Corazon and Jerusalem are the favorites. And the next one! He has one due out in February 2013. THe songs I have heard, which he has been plaing on tour this summer, sound great. He recorded with his touring band, which I hope means it will be more like his late 90s work.

  9. Jerusalem is another one I only know vaguely. I'll fix that soon enough.

  10. Those that hit me the hardest were the comeback- 'Train a Comin', the first major label album as he entered the field with Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakam, and the 'Mountain".
