FOR OUR PLAY LIST OF TEN GREAT WILDERNESS-ERA JOE STRUMMER TUNES, PLEASE COME VISIT THE BIG TAKEOVER!
Another pleasant surprise from Joe Strummer's well-named Wilderness Years are these early sessions with Latino Rockabilly War that were released as part the soundtrack for the Keanu Reeves film, Permanent Record in 1988. While at the time, these songs seemed only marginally more exciting than the follow-up, Earthquake Weather, wiser ears can now enjoy their rough n' ready sound.

Thanks for the post (all!) I have always thought that Earthquake Weather was a rather good record but it has unfortunately been panned by critic and fan alike. But in my humble opinion the song Leopardskin Limousines is simply a great distillation of Joe's somewhat melancholy spirit. The almost spoken lyrics/ song poetry with some sparse backing is almost haunting. Really, for what some might call a throw-away record, I think it totally reflects the direction he was going and I would put some of these song up against some of his later work anytime.
ReplyDeleteThanks, it is surprising that Joe Strummer's unreleased music has not been released or reissued, many albums are oop.
ReplyDelete"Trash City" and "Baby the Trans" are my two favorite post-Clash Joe Strummer records. They hold up well.
ReplyDeleteahead of their time, sounds very current. He is sorely missed. Awesome post, btw. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteExcellent post. I love the song Trash City. Great collection.
ReplyDeletefor a long time i struggled to like
ReplyDeleteJoe's post-Clash stuff, whatever it was. it took me a while to realize that no matter what it was, what it sounded like, it was never going to be the Clash again.
once i realized that, i was able to relax a little and enjoy it all.
thanks for this.
Joe was a great writer of song and poetry. An extremely passionate man, who still today, sounds as if he's trying to get it all out of his system.
ReplyDeleteRIP Joe Strummer

I've always liked it.
ReplyDeleteIt has a bit of the busking vibe with simpler, stream-of-thought lyrics - in a 'me and you against the world' kind of style.
There are shades of Springsteen and impressions of Americana in it without being too celebratory or cliched.
It is fun.
It made up for the downer that Combat Rock was and gave me hope Joe would do some more stuff.
this is so cool. thanks
ReplyDeleteSaw Joe a few times during the Latino Rockabilly War period, and always had a really good time. They did make an odd noise sometimes, but you know, it was Joe, and that was all we needed. We would have followed him almost anywhere. Anyway, thanks a lot for these, Jeffen, cool as always.

ReplyDeleteI agree it's no throw-away record bu that production prevents it from being a total keeper. The Re-mix is coming one day...

Maybe the 10th anniversary of his death will be marker with some solo re-issues...

That's the place I've been at these last few years and I'm glad I got there.
Bio
I'm a CR fan (hell even a CTC fan as you know) and I do like what Strummer was doing here, I just wish there'd been an album of this kida stuff rather than EW kinda stuff.

Oh yeah!
Styrene Boy
During this ear the band usually had really good set lists, so I wish I'd seen them.
Love this era. Soulful, roots, sometimes poignant and vulnerable. Always great. Nefertiti Rock and Cholo Vest are fantastic songs.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting!
Deleted file! Oh, I'm heartbroken now..... please reup?
