Dead Kennedys: The Comic (1993)

Back in the nineties, I remember seeing this comic on the Dead Kennedys from the "Hard Rock" series put out by a company called Revolutionary Comics and being kinda disdainful. Not only did the series have a real Classic Rock bias (Kiss, Metallica, Van Halen) but the artwork smacked of melodrama and the dialog of massive info dumps.

Looking at it now, it seems like a crude-but-charming rock n' roll version of those For Beginners series, complete with the little narrator on the panel edges. The men (writer Deena Dasein and artist Joe Paradise) did their research pretty well and certainly informed me of a few things I didn't know.

Revolutionary Comics has done high-quality scans of some of their best work and you can find out about it HERE!

Whaddya think of this comic book history of the DK's? Let us know in the COMMENTS section.

  4. Definitely better art than the Sex Pistols one, but I don't remember anyone in D.O.A. having hair that long at that time, and certainly not Joe.

Anyone got a scan of f-stop fitzgerald's DK book to prove me right or wrong?

    1. That long-haired Joe picture was the biggest flub in here.

I'd still love to see the Pistols one and the Ramones one...

  5. Yeah it is there...last night I tried too DL it and got a message that it had been removed....most likely something wrong on this end, or maybe just subconsciously "hoping" for the irony of Mr Freedom of Speech Jello Biafra raised hell about it....imagine if that happened, it would be as though a band called themselves "Corrosion of Conformity" and then insisted on conformity themselves. Sorry, glad it is still available

      That's amazing!
I deleted the massive comment just so I can post the links on the main page (where they'll be spread out a bit).

As for the credit I just wanna write 'scans by BigScott1962'. I mean I won't if you object but I love doing that because it shows how much sharing goes on in this little tiny corner of the internet.

Seriously this is one of the most amazing things ever donated to this blog (and we have had some doozies! so THANK YOU!)

  13. Jay Allen Sanford from Rock 'N' Roll Comics here - glad you're digging our stuff! You can get high quality scans of several of our graphic novel compilations on iTunes, Amazon, for Kindle Fire, etc. scanned from our original artwork instead of from printed comics. Available so far is Beatles Experience (8 issues), Pink Floyd (5 issues), Led Zep (5 issues), Elvis (7 issues), and Hard Rock Heroes, with 250 pages of our comics on Guns 'N Roses, Metallica, Ozzy/Sabbath, etc -

Yeah, a lot of our comics were pretty crappy, but we got better artists as things grew, including a lot of guys whose first pro work was for us before they went on to become pretty big in the comics biz. That DK ish was written by a woman who at the time was a sociology professor at DePaul University, where she used our comics in her courses! She also wrote the Motorhead comic - she has a copy of her script personally annotated and corrected by Lemmy himself --

Anyway, feel free to share those scans from your contributor - much of that stuff will never be reprinted (we're trying to mine just the best stuff for the authorized reprints and downloads) --
