The English Beat: Unity Rockers

Many of us who Just Can't Stop It (jumping about like idiots that is) when we hear the first English Beat album struggle with the rest of their catalog. Wha'ppen is an enjoyable calypso-reggae-pop record and Special Beat Service is one of the finer pop albums of the eighties but they both suffer from drastically diminished amounts of the driving ska-punk fusion that so invigorated their debut.

Whatever your Beat bias, you'll find something to your liking on this crisp-as-hell but never officially released recording of their show at The Hammersmith Palais in October of 1982.

  3. I got to see the Beat a couple of times here in Boston, at an old club called "The Channel" way back in the 80's...Always an amazing show, though you were guaranteed to leave sweating after skanking for a couple of hours.

Caught them more recently a few years back at an Earth Day show (sans Ranking Roger). Also a great show, but somehow not the same...Thanks for the post!

  4. this show is great. of course, it's the only beat boot i've ever heard, so i don't really have anything to compare it to...

and i might be in the minority, but i think wha'ppen might be my favorite beat album. but check with me tomorrow, and it might be different.

  8. I like SBS best, but General Public had their moments, too, and so did The International Beat. So much good music started with this band.
    Thank you for posting this.

I have mixed feelings about these recent Beats but would've loved to have seen them back in the day.
