Chixdiggit: Chronic for the Troops

For the Top Ten Chixdiggit songs, please come visit The Big Takeover!

Y'know while Chixdiggit (see "Best Hung Carrot in the Fridge" here) have the chugga-chugga Ramones guitar, the song-writing is a pretty complicated confection, once described, tongue-in-cheek, by KJ as "Glen Campbell meets Queen". The few covers they do, however, show a distinct late seventies/early 80's bias.

The band pretty much doubled their repertoire of covers on this 1998 split with California's The Groovie Ghoulies. While the band covered a Ghoulies song, as befits nineties split releases, the main purpose here is to pay tribute to The Boomtown Rats. On this out-of-print release the Ghoulies make two songs from The Fine Art of Surfacing sound more like Screeching Weasel and the Chix RocktheHell out of two songs from MRML favourite Tonic for the Troops.

HEY, A QUICK COMMENT ON WHY YOU DIGG THE CHIX WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED.

  3. Cheers, love both the bands. I've an embarrassing soft spot for early Boomtown Rats as well.

  5. Humour + brevity plus power-pop-punk from Alberta is a great recipe, that's why I digg 'em. Henry Rollns is no fun, just ask my Mom.

  6. CHIXDIGGIT!

Pink Razors, among their other albums, ruined my life.

I don't think I listened to a single decent thing in High School. Nothing. Well, ok, some decent folk from my dad and Copyright's Hidden World and The Swallow's Turning Blue from my mom. So I suppose I was primed for Canadian indie music.

June 2005, CBC Radio 3 launches their podcast. Holy shit. I know for a fact that in the first year of Zunior's existence I was in their top 10 buyers. I listened to an episode, checked Zunior and CDBaby, and then Amazon and emailed Dave Ullrich constantly asking about adding music.

Among that was, of course, Chixdiggit!. Pink Razors, and that started a hunt for everything else. I've never heard of "Chronic for the Troops" but thatnks for both this and Best Hung Carrot in the Fridge.

Lyrical funny super-fast pop music with an edge, you can't go wrong.

  7. This is a pretty fun curio. I'll probably steal a couple songs for my covers mixes. Saw the Rats on their "Tonic" tour at the Commodore - amazingly good show. At the time I predicted they'd be the new Rolling Stones. Oh, how wrong I turned out to be.

Quick note though: the album art gets it wrong. Chixdiggit do "She's So Modern" not "Tonic For The Troops".

    Thx as always!

I do honestly think that Pink Razors is their best, there best songs are spread all over but PR is the bets collection.

I so wish I'd seen The Rats, of well, at least I saw Chixdiggit I guess. Thanks for noting the type, which is an odd one as the actual title is repeated a dozen times in the song...

That Sub Pop album can't be topped. It's contains their most political song to date, "Dolphins Love Children." Gotta love that grunge sound too.

Oh, and before I forget... can I request an outta-print obscure Canadian side project band's record? I'm gonna go ahead and request it before you can answer... The Tonics - Looking for the Good Times album... I believe it came out on Lance Rock. Good record! Can't find it!
