Connie & The Lingustics 7" (1982)

Holy Hell! Early eighties New York band, Connie & The Linguistics lay somewhere between punk and new wave, between Blondie and The Plasmatics and between bad taste and worse taste.

Deconstructing the elements of this video wields a bounty of awkward joy; Connie's burlesque moves, the punk guy who gets to shout "Crazy!" a lot and do the rap plus almost every one in the video commits pantomime suicide at one point. Truly the punk band of John Waters' dreams.

While staying on the same video set, Connie & co., get to show off their more pop aspirations and celebrate the "Nu Way" by giving some business dude a fuckin' mohawk.

  3. The source of these tracks seems to be ripped from the same youtube videos and the sound is really bad and sucks. I have the original 7'' and it sounds amazing.

Are you for real? If you have good rips, why not consider sending it this way so everyone can enjoy the "amazing versions"?
    I await your reply.

I found these videos back when preparing my Lords of The New Church posts and couldn't stop watching - fascinating stuff.

  6. Ouch. Defending The Monkees hipness in 1967 would have been a walk in the park compared to giving these folks a punk rock thumbs up in the early 80's. Didn't Connie guest star on Quincy or something like that? If not she should have.

  8. I love the old videos with just an empty studio and the band. No big directors, no overreaching plot, just guitars and stagecraft.

I also would like to hear those original recordings because I can barely make out any of the words in these songs.

It's clee-ah the band the band were trying to look the part, but they aren't angry enough to be punks nor polished enough to be new wave. I knew a lot of bands like this, they desperately wanted to make music and would bend to any trend in order to get signed. None of them made it beyond one album.

If you ever speak to Linda tell her we'd love to post any memories she has of the band.
